Introduction
ASML is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of chip-making equipment. With 70 locations worldwide in 16 countries, ASML has an international presence in the semiconductor industry. For our Corporate Intellectual Property (CIP) department at the global headquarters in Veldhoven, we are looking for a recently qualified Dutch or European Patent Attorney. Candidates who are at an advanced stage in becoming a qualified Patent Attorney are also invited to apply.
Job Mission
Establishing, prosecuting and maintaining patent rights in the field of DUV lithography systems, as well as evaluating and reducing patent risks from a worldwide perspective.
Job Description
You will be part of the Patents DUV group which currently consists of nine Patent Attorneys and report to the Director Patents DUV. Your responsibilities include:
- Interacting with Research and D&E groups in order to determine opportunities to establish patent rights and assess potential patent risks.
- Autonomously managing a patent portfolio in one or more technical fields, including filing and prosecution of patent rights worldwide as well as reporting on and regular pruning of the patent portfolio.
- Determine risks posed by third party patent portfolios and mitigate identified risks. Assist in court cases if needed.
- Provide objective, informed and legally competent advice and direction to the management of the DUV business regarding intellectual property rights, opportunities, risks and liabilities in consultation with a more experienced patent attorney.
Education
You have a MSc degree in physics, mechanics, electrical engineering or similar technical field.
You are a qualified Dutch and/or European Patent Attorney or are in an advanced state of qualifying.
Experience
- Technical experience in optics, mechatronics or similar field.
- Solid basic experience in handling IP matters in industry or IP law firm.
- Strong English language skills.
- Dutch language skills preferred.

- Being able to go into detail, but having the helicopter view when necessary.
- Strong analytical and good communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in teams.
- Decisive and self-initiating.
- Good “sparring partner” to inventors.
- Pro-active and customer-friendly mindset.
Context of the position
Within ASML, the CIP department is responsible for maximizing ASML’s global intellectual property position to protect and support ASML’s business. In particular, the department strives to preserve freedom to operate for ASML and to establish and maintain a portfolio of patent rights.
At the CIP department, about 60 people work in four locations (Veldhoven in the Netherlands and Wilton, San Diego and Silicon Valley area in the US) to accomplish the above-stated mission. The patent attorneys work in one of three groups, organized along ASML’s business lines: Patents DUV group, Patents EUV group, or Patents APS group.
